Millions of people snore and very few of them actually know whether or not it is related to a more serious condition known as sleep apnea. Snoring can be brought on by a variety of reasons such as excess weight, smoking, and drinking alcohol before bed. However, snoring can also be a symptom of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition in which a person stops breathing for a period of ten seconds or more several times a night.

If you snore you should go to your doctor to determine whether or not you have sleep apnea. Sleep apnea carries some serious risks with it such as heart attack and stroke. Immediate symptoms include morning headaches, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and general tiredness throughout the day. When the body isn't getting enough oxygen and the heart is working extra hard there are many problems associated with this.

Sleep apnea is typically caused by a person's anatomy. For instance, if there is extra tissue in the throat it may cause a temporary obstruction and a blockage of air. Luckily there are several treatment options for sleep apnea. One option is surgery. If your sleep apnea is caused by anatomy you may be able to have a surgical procedure done which may reduce or remove the obstruction. Another option is a CPAP machine. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure and forces air in and out of the lungs, regardless of any obstructions. These require the patient to wear a face mask, but most people get used to it after a few nights.

Many people who snore or live with someone who does think of snoring as just another annoying habit. However, snoring can be very serious and cause major health problems down the road. What's more annoying than trying to sleep with someone who snores? Snoring can cause sleep loss not only for the person who snores, but also for the one who's sleeping with them. That loss of sleep makes a person sleepy and irritable the next day and can affect their productivity.

There are situations where relationships have been hurt due to snoring. Many times a person resorts to sleeping in another room; thus, affecting the intimate life of the couple and making the one who snores feel guilty and blame themselves.

Snoring is best described as heavy, noisy breathing. Most people snore at certain times due to congestion and occasionally the dog and cat are heard snoring, but snoring becomes a problem when you and your partner lose sleep because of it. One who snores usually tosses and turns a lot, unable to breathe properly, causing a restless night. If the snoring is moderate, the person will usually stop when they turn over, but severe snoring continues throughout the night regardless of their sleep position. This type of severe snoring is a loud noise that can be heard even through walls in a house.

The cause of snoring is an obstructed air passage in the back of the throat and nose. When the body is in sleep mode, the muscles in the body relax, as do the muscles in the throat. As air is breathed in and out of the lungs through the nose and throat, this obstruction blocks the air passage.

Many things can cause a person to snore, such as inheriting a narrow throat; being overweight with fatty tissue in the neck; ageing; gender is a factor, as normally men snore, due to having narrower air passages than women do; adenoids or tonsils being enlarged that obstruct the airway; allergies, asthma, cold or sinus infection will cause breathing problems; sleeping on the back relaxes the throat and will block the airway. Rolling the person over on their side many times will stop the snoring.

Serious health problems can result due to reduced oxygen to the brain. Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and heart disease are all developing factors of snoring; even premature death can result.

Sleep apnea is a common symptom of snoring. The inability to breathe correctly will cause a person to wake up, just so they are able to breathe again. This can happen many times a night with no memory of all the awakenings the next morning. The person will experience a feeling of sleepiness even though the person has had several hours of sleep. To determine if one has sleep apnea, tests can be run to check for this.

To determine treatment, the general health of a person has to be taken into consideration. For instance, if someone has heart problems and high blood pressure, a device is worn to improve the breathing and maintain a steady flow of air through the throat and nose. This device is used on patients who have sleep apnea and is not intended for those with simple snoring. Surgery of the nose, throat and jaw help some, but not all people. Over-the-counter treatments have not been researched enough to prove any effective results. However, the external nasal strip placed over the bridge of the nose has shown to reduce snoring. There are also spray lubricants for the throat and nose and magnetic pillows that claim to help with snoring, but tests have shown them to be not much help.

There are some things a person can do themselves, such as lose weight and avoid sleeping on their back. Also, try sleeping without a pillow, as when the head is propped up on a pillow, this can cause a blockage of the air passage through the throat and nose.

My final tip may involve spending a little money, but I?ve personally had some good results with this before I lost weight.

This tip involves buying an air purifier. Something to take all the dust, smoke, airborne particles, anything that?s in the air.

This makes the air much cleaner and easier to breathe at night. If you have pets, you should definitely get one. The difference in how easy it is to breathe may astound you. It also helps for when you have a cold and feel like your sinuses are blocked up.

The Quest For A Good Night's Sleep When Snoring And Sleep Apnea Are Present

Does your partner snore and disturb your sleep? There's no point arguing about it, because the snorer probably has not control over what's happening. In fact, it may signal an issue that requires immediate medical attention.

Snoring is caused by a blockage in the breathing passage, and may be caused by:

  • Allergies
  • Mis-positioned jaw or tongue
  • Throat weakness
  • Fatty deposits in and around the throat
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • The final cause listed, obstructive sleep apnea, can be a major medical problem that requires treatment. Snoring occurs because of the movement of air around the narrow air passage formed by soft tissues at the back of your throat and nose. In obstructive sleep apnea, snoring is a serious problem that interferes with normal breathing patterns during sleep. Sleep apnea can be recognized by the fact that the sufferer will snore when asleep on his back, but doesn't snore when he sleeps on his side.

    So what actually happens in sleep apnea? Basically, the upper airway collapses, which makes breathing difficult for a short period of time. This can be caused by an obstruction in the nasal passage, the soft tissues of the throat, soft palate or tongue. The negative pressures of inhaling often make the problem worse, by making it harder on the soft tissues. Eventually, the person wakes up, which puts more tension on the muscles, throat and tongue, and starts them breathing again as the airways open up to supply oxygen to the lungs. Often this is accompanied by snorting and startled awakening patterns.

    Sleep apnea tends to follow a standard pattern, which is the person snores, then for 10-20 seconds stops breathing, which results in the snoring going quiet. Then the patient gasps for breath suddenly, and wakes up with a snort in order to inhale more air. This pattern is referred to as the sleep-snore-apnea-wake pattern. As you can imagine, this makes it very difficult for the sufferer to get a good night's sleep. Well over 90% of people with sleep apnea display this pattern, and can occur as many as 100-400 times in one night in extreme cases.

    The good news is that there are a number of things that can be used to help relieve the problem of sleep apnea. Once your doctor has determined what's causing the problem, he or she will discuss treatment options with you, so that you can choose the most appropriate one.

  • Wearing a mask at night to improve breathing by keeping the throat open
  • Using decongestants and antihistamines to keep the nasal passages unclogged
  • Sleeping in the upright position can be helpful for overweight sufferers. This can be achieved by elevating the head of the bed.
  • Using 'Breathe Right' strips to relieve blocked nasal passages at nighttime
  • Special pillow to stretch the neck
  • Turbinectomy. The nasal passages are opened by removing soft tissue and bone in this surgical procedure
  • Laser surgery can remove excess tissue from the soft palate and uvula
  • CPAP. A mask covers the patient's nose, and air is supplied through the mask at a predetermined level. This way the optimal air pressure is always maintained.
  • Dental appliances can be used to hold the jaw or tongue forward, keeping the airway open at the back of the throat
  • Injection Snoreplasty. In this procedure a topical anesthetic is injected into the back of the throat and palate, giving a numbed effect. This stiffens the mouth for around three weeks, which stops the palate fluttering and producing the snoring noise
